Brewery Tour

Welcome

We invite you to enjoy a tour through one of Europe's most modern breweries. Discover for yourself how Erdinger Weissbier is brewed and gets its unique flavor. Take a look around the brewhouse, visit our high-bay warehouse and watch our master brewers in action.

Station 1

Raw materials

Erdinger’s wheat beers owe their characteristic, fine yeasty flavor and exceptional quality to our well-guarded recipes and the purity of our spring water:
Erdinger wheat beers are brewed using water from our own sources – water which has been stored deep underground since the last Ice Age (10-15,000 years ago), where it has been kept cool and pure by the surrounding rocks ready to be enjoyed by you as a refreshing glass of Erdinger Weissbier! This special water is pumped up from a depth of 157.5 meters.

Naturally, all our beers are brewed according to the Bavarian Purity Law. Dating from 1516, it is the oldest law governing foodstuffs anywhere in the world and still in force today. Then, as now, the law ensures that only the purest ingredients are used.

Only the finest 'flavor hops' from the Hallertau region are used to brew Erdinger wheat beers. The best wheat and barley malts guarantee Erdinger's unique taste experience – fully matured through the natural fermentation process of our fresh, powerful, top-fermenting yeast.

Together with our pure, fresh spring water, these ingredients combine to produce a superbly refreshing drinking experience – Erdinger wheat beer!

Station 2

Brewhouse

Our two state-of-the-art brewhouses are the heart – and the pride – of our wheat beer brewery. Once dominated by huge, glimmering copper pans, we now mash our barley and wheat malts in mash tuns made of stainless steel – combining state-of-the-art brewing technology with traditional processes. The steel pans can be cleaned more easily than traditional copper pans.
The wort created by this process is separated in the so-called lauter tun from the glume of the barley malt and fed into the wort tun. Here it is boiled together with the hops and then evaporated to make the wort. Then the wort is placed in a whirlpool or hot wort receiver in order to precipitate the protein. From there it flows directly into the fermentation cellar.

This is how we protect the environment ...
We feed most of the heat generated in the brewing process back into the heating cycle. This saves 80% of our primary energy needs! The spent grain extracted from the glume is given to neighboring farmers, who feed it to their cows. Erdinger Weissbier is thus made in a particularly energy-saving and environmentally friendly manner!

Station 3

Fermentation cellar

In the fermentation cellar that houses 64 fermentation tanks, each holding 125,000 liters, our special top-fermenting yeast transforms the malt sugar of the original wort into alcohol and carbon dioxide. This process is carried out at constant temperatures and takes about a week. The result of this stage of the brewing process is an intermediate product: the "young" or "green" beer!

Station 4

Filtration cellar

In the filtration cellar all impure sediment is removed from the young beer. For traditional bottle fermentation we then add fresh wort and pure yeast.

The filtration cellar is also equipped with the latest brewing technology: our filter channel 1 works with cartridge filters and produces 55,000 liters per hour. Filter channel 2 clarifies 22,000 liters an hour using frame filters.

Station 5

Bottling plant

Our bottles, kegs and cans are all carefully cleaned before being filled, labeled, crown-corked, sealed and packed into crates or cartons.

Broken, chipped or non-Erdinger bottles, for example, are all automatically extracted.
Two ultra-modern bottling plants ensure rapid production processes.

While one plant fills 60,000 bottles per hour, the other can manage as many as 110,000. We are especially proud of our traditional "bottle fermentation", i.e. Erdinger Weissbier matures directly in the bottle, keg or can.

Each individual process is carefully monitored – quality is our highest priority.

Station 6

Warehouse

In our fully computerized, precisely air-conditioned, high-bay warehouse up to 15 million bottles of Erdinger Weissbier are maturing at any one time towards their characteristic flavor, in a process similar to that of champagne production!
Via an underground link road, the bottling plant is linked directly to our computer-controlled warehouse, in which the beer matures for three to four weeks.

Everything is fully automated: huge quantities of pallets stacked with Erdinger Weissbier are stored on shelves several meters high.

With seven different types and countless manufacturing dates, it would be virtually impossible for any human to keep track. This is not the case with our warehouse computer, which automatically calls up the right type of wheat beer in the required quantity and after the prescribed storage time.

Station 7

Shipping

Yet another reason why our beer is so popular with wheat beer connoisseurs and the retail trade is to be found in our sophisticated logistics system. We are renowned for our quick and accurate deliveries!
For instance, one pallet holds 40 crates.

This means that every day around 50 trucks loaded with 54,000 beer crates, i.e. 1.08 million bottles of beer, leave our warehouse.

Three fork-lift trucks work in a two-shift system with a respective load capacity of four pallets per lift.
